LEFTOVER SALMON

 

Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder in 1989, the Colorado slamgrass pioneers took their aggressive bluegrass to rock and roll bars at a time when it wasn’t so common, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre. Today, Leftover Salmon is: Vince Herman, Drew Emmitt, Andy Thorn, Greg Garrison, and Alwyn Robinson. Though the lineup would change through the years, the foundation of Leftover Salmon remained strongly rooted in the relationship between co-founders Emmitt, Herman, and banjoist, Mark Vann, proceeding through a decade of constant growth and nonstop touring. In 2004 the band took a hiatus from touring and had they never played another note, the Leftover Salmon legacy would have been secure; but in the summer of 2007, they were ready to hit the road again. Soon after, banjo phenom Andy Thorn was brought into the group, a new album, Aquatic Hitchhiker, (2012) was recorded and released to critical acclaim, NPR’s Mountain Stage, heralding the group as “one of the most beloved acts on America’s summer-festival circuit.”

AARON KAMM & THE ONE DROPS

A staple of the St. Louis music scene, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops play an intoxicating concoction of Roots Reggae and Mississippi River Blues. Improv-laced Jams, dubbed-out grooves and Effervescent Vocals make this band a must see. If you want a manifold of rhythm and beats, you need only stay tuned, they’ve been keeping the local music circuit on both sides of the river grooving for years. They first jammed in late October 2007 and in 2012 released their third studio album “The Bomb and the Beast”. Now this independent trio is beginning to forge their way across the country. They make themselves at home, bringing vibes none other could mimic, nor supersede. The band has played venues and festivals such as The Pageant, Laurie’s, 2720 Cherokee, TOCO, MoRoots & more. JON WAYNE AND THE PAIN

 

For nearly a decade, electronic reggae-dub innovators Jon Wayne and The Pain have been crafting a unique sound, one that features a mesmerizing blend of modern age electronic beats fused with upbeat traditional roots reggae and a fresh layer of grooving funk to keep the soul moving in all the right ways. The Twin Cities-based ensemble burst onto the festival scene in 2007 following their debut self-titled album, and has since built a highly devoted following through multi-dimensional jamming, extensive touring and influential songwriting. Inscrutable and unpredictable, Jon Wayne and The Pain’s cutting edge style has taken them across the nation to some of the country’s biggest music festivals including Electric Forest, Summer Camp, Cali Roots and Wakarusa. Their transcendent live performances and fluid chemistry has propelled them to the forefront of reggae music, and with an ever-changing musical paradigm it is evident that this Midwestern quartet is an absolute force to be reckoned with.

MOUNTAIN SPROUT

Mountain Sprout is a highly energetic hillbilly music machine, spitting original tunes and blowing minds with whitty lyrics and face melting musicianship. The Sprouts are a full-time working band and play shows all year round for anyone who will listen. Whether it be Grayson Klauber playing his machine gun banjo, singing out the novel of our lives or guitarists Adam Waggs and Ratliffe Dean Thiebaud, who yank up the melody up by the ear and keep you kickin'. With a smile on his face, Daniel Redmond pulls out cannon fire notes pounding the stand-up dog house bass, and Mike Schembre gives the crowd a spectacular show, burnin' rosin and bendin' air, exploding the fiddle while bursting into flames. Together, they are MOUNTAIN SPROUT.

VITAMEN A

You could hear a strong funk groove turn into a jazzy ballad and then a heavy crunch to a country, soul, pscycodelic, ska, porno, reggae, gospel tune! Currently a five piece with a Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Sly and The Family, Stone type sound, but then againn ot really. The core has stayed close through the years and into the future. VA has released several albums: Silence Vitamin A 1994, Perplexed Vitamin A 1996, and History of heroes Vitamen A 2002. The Vitamen A album History of Heroes was recorded in downtown Festus, MO.

OLD SALT UNION

 

Old Salt Union is known for playing music by their own set of rules. While the men who make up this group are not complete rebels, they are certainly thinking about the future of music. They find influence in the bluegrass roots of The Del McCoury Band and Sam Bush, but also draw inspiration from Bill Evans, Danny Elfman, Punch Brothers, and many more talented musicians. What makes Old Salt Union so special is their ability to stretch the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music by incorporating in-depth musical arrangements, a catchy hook, and an uncanny pop sensibility. They truly are a new generation of bluegrass in the industry.

YO MAMA's BIG FAT BOOTY BAND

Funk is more than a musical genre, it’s a way of life. And since that mindset is what Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band embodies every day, the collective titled its fourth studio album Funk Life. The group has a keen sense of immediacy; “When you walk away from a show, you want to remember something,” says Mary Frances, and that’s why the Booty Band focuses on contagious choruses. The band, which formed in the college town of Boone, North Carolina, in 2002, has shared stages with the likes of Parliament Funkadelic, Galactic, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Maceo Parker and Bootsy Collins. They’re in high demand on the festival circuit, putting in appearances at Wakarusa, Bear Creek, Jam Cruise, Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, Aura Fest, Floyd Fest, DeLuna Festival, Jazz Aspen, Center of the Universe Festival, Purple Hatters Ball, Camp Barefoot and Trinumeral, among others. Ruth Acuff is an original trio bringing us music from their hearts. They believe in the light and darkness in us all and their music reflects that. DONNY & THE WANDERING TRAILS

 

Starting out like many great favorites, friends getting together to jam and explore the relms of music and community. Donny & The Wandering Trails might even be hailed responsible for bringing light and life back to the once quaint 1800s town of Koester, MO. In the 1900s Koester turned into a ghost town and all that remained where a few old buildings. When Donny Goldman acquired the property in the late 1990s he saw himself as a steward of the land ment to be shared with the people. Shortly after he started hosting his annual Freedom Fest here. Now known as Astral Valley, the legacy lives on through other community gatherings and Donny & The Wanding Trails continue to bring their mix of Bluegrass, Americana, Blues, and folk tunes with to the Valley.

Particle began its journey in Los Angeles in 2000 as one of the key pioneers of the emerging ‘livetronica’ music scene. The band created a signature sound that combined elements of Electronica, Funk and Rock with a heavy emphasis on improvisation and sonic exploration, and their influence can still be felt and heard in many of today’s top touring Jam and EDM/Funk bands. Always striving to think outside the box and create unique concert experiences, Particle paired their high-energy dance music with cutting-edge multimedia production, thematic special events, and epic marathon sets that quickly developed a loyal fan base of Particle People spanning genre lines from jam to EDM.

Thirty years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music.  With a wealth of desire and an abundance of ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent deftly able to contribute, collaborate, compose, and communicate on a number of levels and within a vast spectrum of musical environments. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know that they can jerk from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only onstage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

DIRTFOOT

 

For over 10 years, Dirtfoot has been spreading their infectious grooves and their unique Gypsy Punk Country Grumble Boogie sound. The crowds come to take part in the fun and chaos, hollering to all the calls and responses, shaking their beancans, and getting down with the infectious grooves. Led by Matt & J, Dirtfoot is a blend of eclectic styles as well as diverse personalities. Featuring instruments ranging from guitar, banjo, trumbone, upright bass, drums, percussion and more, this band has a truly unique yet familiar sound. It is like a good gumbo - you have some growling vocals, heavy bass and percussion that makes a good, dark, dirty Louisiana roux, mixed heartily with some meaty rhythms, combined liberally with fresh offerings from the guitar and banjo that are like okra and tomatoes picked from your backyard garden, topped with the hot n' sexy spice of  trumbone and lead guitar, and finally a little something magical and indescribable, and you have Dirtfoot - a delicious, spicy, dirty band that will make you stomp your feet, shake your ass and yell like a lunatic on a full moon night.

SHUGYO

The Japanese term Shugyo refers to developing and honing a practitioner’s character through hard physical and mental training. The band began in the Spring of 2015 with bassist Jason Heeter, guitarist Matt Gates, and drummer JJ Seabaugh. The 3 were the only remaining members of the Cape Girardeau based funk band Monstars, and decided a new name and new direction was needed. That direction is Shugyo. Combining myriad styles and influences from the world of jazz to the symphony halls, Shugyo push the boundaries of style to create a blend truly their own.

THAT 1 GUY

Imagine the brainchild of Dr. Seuss, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Stanley Kubrick and Rube Goldberg, and you begin to understand the spectacle of a That 1 Guy performance by Berkeley, CA-based, classically trained musician Mike Silverman. As inventor and player of The Magic Pipe, That 1 Guy’s show has to be seen to be believed, as he single-handedly (and foot-edly) plays his amazing instrument, made out of miked steel pipes with a single, thick bass string wired from top to bottom, not to mention an Appalachian handsaw, an electric cowboy boot and belching smoke. Combining elements of classical music with electronica, and equal parts music, technology, science, art and spectacle. A That 1 Guy concert is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, like taking a trip around the world without leaving your seat.

DRIVING WHEEL

Driving Wheel is the perfect blend of experience and youth. A power-trio in the classic mold of Cream, Band of Gypsys, the original Gov't Mule and ZZ Top. In the words of Aarik Danielson (Columbia Tribune), "Driving Wheel has achieved a blistering sound built around tough, melodic guitar licks, grinding grooves and vocals that come from somewhere deep in the gut. Its music contains echoes of long-gone blues masters while finding room for a more modern musical language. Songs can go from a whimper to a roar in a heartbeat." Playing together since 2007 & with a new album being co-produced by Stephen Shirk (Alabama Shakes, Patterson Hood, etc.), Driving Wheel appears to be poised for a breakthrough 2015.
